Week of Compassion
Week of Compassion is more than a week. It is a ministry of the whole Church, reaching those in need "around the world, around the year.” Any time we respond to a need in the world, we bear witness to the unity of our table, faithfully sharing the gifts that we have as an expression of Christ's love. In working together with partners, we represent the Disciples of Christ commitment to unity, making our resources reach farther and growing our impact on a global scale.
Each year in February, First Christian Church in connection with congregations across the United States and Canada collect a special offering for Week of Compassion. Funds received through the offering allow the Church to respond to disaster when it occurs, enabling Week of Compassion to immediately provide grants for urgent needs like emergency supplies, water and food. Special Offering is a time when our church community comes together to lift up and celebrate this important work that we do together.
Disciples Mission Fund
Every day, Disciples answer the call to be a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. We accept our mission of witness and service to all people in the name of Jesus the Christ. No matter the challenges we face – from combatting racism to ending human trafficking, from starting a church to sustaining a community – Disciples know that by sharing the work, we accomplish what, by God’s design, we cannot do alone.
Every Easter, First Christian Church gives to the Disciples Mission Fund (DMF) bringing the whole Church together, connecting us to the life-giving and life-saving work we have been called to do. It also simplifies giving for congregations and individuals, providing a way to support the entire Church at once. DMF-funded regional and general ministries offer opportunities for Disciples to serve as missionaries, attend college or seminary, advocate for the least of these, and so much more. When you make a gift to Disciples Mission Fund, you share God’s love from your doorsteps to the ends of the Earth.
New Church Ministries
Our church planters remain committed to answering God’s call . . . to serve their neighbors, spread the gospel, and make more Disciples. Through the 2020 Vision, the new church movement has already helped our Disciples family grow by nearly 1,000 new and affiliated faith communities. These communities, in turn, bear the fruit of God’s work: caring for the needy, welcoming the homeless, feeding the hungry, teaching the young, and taking part in their neighborhoods’ revitalization through transformational mission and ministry.
Each year around Pentecost, First Christian Church gives to New Church Ministries, to help our new church movement continue to take root. Each year, half of this offering stays in the local Region or Area where it’s collected to start and uphold new churches. The other half is used across the United States and Canada by New Church Ministry to support the recruiting, assessing, training and coaching of new church leaders at events like Leadership Academy.
Higher Education & Leadership Ministries
From the very beginnings of the movement, Disciples have founded institutions of higher learning, encouraging students in their intellectual pursuits. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is still committed to higher education. Currently, over 50,000 students attend our fourteen Disciples related colleges and universities or seven seminaries and divinity houses. And in the past twelve months, over 12,000 students have graduated from these fine schools.
Every November, First Christian Church in connection with congregations across the US and Canada will collect the Thanksgiving offering. Your gift to the Thanksgiving offering helps to support the work of our institutions of higher learning in many ways: financially supporting Disciples related schools, providing undergraduate scholarships and support for spiritual life offices, and providing scholarships and support for those pursuing theological education. Your gifts make a world of difference as Disciples continue our legacy of supporting education and our institutions of higher learning.
